1. The internet helps amplify and spread marginalized voices. What could black people have done in the 1920s south to oppose a monument?
2. A lot of these statues and monuments aren't 100 years old. Many went up in the 40s and 50s in pushback to the civil rights movement. A monument went up in Delaware in 2007.

The "everybody's a winner" generation is coming of age where they have influence. Sadly, people consider their opinions as valid. Instead of appreciating opposing views, they throw a tantrum when they encounter an unfavorable opinion, as their upbringing prevented them from developing even the most rudimentary coping mechanisms.

I don't remember any discussions on TV, the media, the classroom, etc about these statues back when I was growing up in the 90s or early 2000s. Suddenly, everyone is talking about them. It's really strange.

IMO, it's because there is always a hunt.

"Okay, what's the next thing we can find that we'll find offensive so that we can get offended by it and attack it? Everyone start looking immediately!"

Statues just ultimately came around.

Personally, I think that in school a lot of younger people (millennials) were taught this sort of lie that the US was past its race related issues. However, when people went out in the real world and saw obvious racism is obvious, many have taken on a sort of new crusade.

I doubt you'll find too many older people calling for these statues to be taken down in comparison to young people. To young people, the idea these statues are up is shocking as it doesn't fit into the idea of a "post racial America" they were sold on as kids, and so want to take them down in the new anti racism crusade.

I really have nothing to back this up so my opinion is safely ignored. But I think a lot of why younger see race as they do has to do with how misleading grade school education is when it comes to civil rights and race related issues.

black people vastly outnumbered white people in former slave states when the civil war ended. The problem is they were disfranchised, uneducated, and had no real way to band as a community except through tiny churches which were like some dude's house with a cross out in front. They were blocked from voting, and if they found a way to vote, the KKK would lynch them.

It's not just a matter of numbers, for the longest time they literally didn't have the same rights as white people. when they got rights, they lacked education. When they got education, they lacked money. White racists started out having all of those things and that's why they were able to keep the systems of oppression in place for as long as they did.

Yeah there's that too. Which is why the whole "erase history" argument rings as disingenuous to me. When you have the majority of these statues erected during the Civil Rights movement it's clear they weren't built to "honor history", they were built at best to reshape history and at worse to intimidate people.

If you did you'd realize the path of people who want to erase and destroy it always ends badly.

From the spartans to the Library of Alexandria to Nazis to The Islamic State to Stalin.

The people who try to hide, erase and deface history are the ones who don't learn from it and it always results in pain and ignorance.

History occured, things happen and exist. Trying to remove accounts of them in as many forms as possible is a bad thing that only ends pourly.

There is no historical account ever that I am aware of which entailed a group of angry emotional unintelligent people trying to destroying history they dislike that ended in any way positively for anyone.

Sure, we absolutely need to inform people that the people sold into slavery were more often than not other tribes that were conquered in Africa.

We also should point out that the use of slave labor in the US extended far past other European countries and that the US system of plantation slavery was by far unique to the US compared to the rest of the world.

I'm sorry, do you think the problem people have with Confederate monuments is that they were built by slaves? Because
    A) they weren't
    B) The problem people have with them is that they glorify tyrants who fought to uphold that tyranny over an entire race of people.

Reading this post may induce one or more of the following:
    Nausea / Butt-Hurt / Lulz / UM? Syndrome / Angst / Diarrhea
Black people didn't have any input into the building of those statues. The reason why they are being torn down now is a logical consequence of black people having greater franchise in today's society. This is also something that happens every single generation. There's always going to be s*** our parents did or supported that we're going to look back on and say, that's not right. To simply continue honoring that even when we know it is wrong is to cultivate hypocrisy.

i dont get why people want the statues down

      lets take robert e lee

besides slavery and confederacy he also fought in the us army in the mexican american war

he was against the south seceding and got an offer to lead the union soldiers but decided he could not fight his family so he fought with his family

some even say he may have helped his wife smuggle blacks to freedom when noone was looking

each of the people the statues are of had long histories and not all about slavery.

after the civil war he even supported lots of civil rights for blacks(wanted them educated long before they could vote)

removing all robert e lee statues would be trying to erase history.

now if there was one depicting him whipping or mistreating a colored person i would say take that one down

If southerners want to truly celebrate their heritage and what not they should all be for tearing down the monuments tbh

The south is more well known for losing a war that caused it to cease to exist. They should elect a giant white flag in the place of every confederate statue/flag. That's how you would truly be honoring the confederacy
