http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/08/17/peta-pays-family-50000-taking-euthanising-pet-chihuahua/ The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta)has apologised and paid a family almost $49,000 after taking and euthanising a little girl's pet chihuahua.
Two people affiliated with the group travelled to the mobile home park because they said they had been asked for help picking up wild dogs and feral cats.
They removed an unattended chihuahua calledMaya, which was a Christmas present to nine-year-old Cynthia Zarate.
Her father, Wilber Zarate, from Virginia, sued the company after it picked up his daughter's dog from the mobile home park and putting it down before a five day grace period was up.Now that's what I call ethical treatment.

PETA is "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals" in the same way that North Korea is a "Democratic People's Republic".

Maya was put down the same day she was caught, which was a violation of a state law that requires a five-day grace period.
Peta was fined $500 for the violation, and had to pay more after Mr Zarate took further action.
He claimed that the group operates under a policy of putting down healthy animals because it“considers pet ownership to be a form of involuntary bondage”.
Peta denied this, claiming the 2014 incident was a "terrible accident".Hot damn they didnt even give it a day

How'd they get it, was it in their yard still or roaming without a collar? If it was in the families yard, they should face criminal charges.

f*** that. Money can't replace things like that. That's as fair as giving someone $100,000 for killing their son and saying it seems fair.

But yet if it were a human life it would be hundreds of thousands of dollars. I consider pets part of the family.

This. "Fair" would be shutting PETA down for good and every last cent they had goes towards families they've wronged and humane societies.

Nothing can in these scenarios so what's your "fair" reparations eternal bondage? And it's a f***ing dog, they'll get over it. $50k is fair. More than fair. When she graduates college free of debt (assuming the parents don't blow it) she'll not be thinking about the dog she had.

f*** off. They had their dog stolen and killed. That's f***ed up no matter how you try to justify that "it was just a dog".

Pretty sure deliberately killing someone's dog could qualify as animal cruelty.

Then it's Malicious Destruction of Property, which is felony in Virginia if the family paid more than $1000 for the dog.

Not a bad settlement for a dog. Also humans are typically valued at millions of dollars for wrongful death.

I don't think anyone here's arguing about the literal law. They're arguing about ethics and morals within the current definition of the law.

That's fine though you don't have to. Not everyone's gonna feel that way. But you're also conviently forgetting about all the people who want children and can't have them for one reason or another and those who don't like/want children but still want a companion, best friend, or "fur-baby". You might not be able to take them seriously but theres plenty who feel the same about you and would consider you to be selfish and pretentious for thinking everyone has the same opportunities available to them as you do.

True but in the end trying to equate a pet with a living human child is stupid and most anyone who does so deserves to be laughed at tbh

Obviously there are exceptions like what you brought up, but in general if someone talks about their pets being like their children it tells me that they have no idea what it's like to have children
