Elite colleges

https://m.mic.com/articles/183257/8-students-of-color-speak-out-about-having-their-qualifications-questioned-at-elite-colleges#.4flXN8o6F

One part that stood out in particular

“What bothered me most about those experiences is that I worked extremely hard to get into college, to earn a scholarship, and even harder to keep it. Nothing was given to me or any other person of color in college. If anything, we have to work harder to prove ourselves.

White america often believes these opportunities are fucking gifted to us, when in reality, due to racial inequalities in public education (and lack of college prep for underprivileged children of color), we often have to work harder with less resources.

To actually pull it off, only for some moron to assume you only made it because of AA is particularly frustrating and almost lead to a few fights when I was an undergrad

Based off what I've seen of your posting history, I bet what really happened is a white guy casually said hello to you and you lost your mind and started making loud dinosaur sounds at him.

It's hypocritical to complain about whites questioning your qualifications and experiences if you're also just going to question white people's qualifications and experiences by saying you had to work harder. That's impossible to quantify. Just leave it at "I worked hard to get to where I am" and let's all agree that success requires hard work.

Saying you had to work harder than a white person is no different than a white person saying they had to work harder than a black person who receives AA. At the end of the day, success requires hard work no matter what.

It's really frustrating all around. Just like you don't want your qualifications, work ethic, and challenges questioned I don't want mine questioned either.

Well to be fair AA is the biased belief that people of color need the deck stacked for them to compete with white people.

Some of closest friends in college were white. Try again

The person speaking really has no right to make this claim.

Anyways, this is what happens when AA is a thing. If the employers were evil racists then they wouldn't even bother wasting time to verify if the candidate was qualified.

I remember when I applied to colleges, no one asked me for my GPA or extracurriculars. They just assumed I was a good fit for the college because I'm white.

I don't recall claiming that my having to work harder than your average white person to get into college suddenly means said white people arent qualified

That's impossible to quantify. Just leave it at "I worked hard to get to where I am" and let's all agree that success requires hard work.

Sorry, I tend to disagree with naive opinions. To deny the fact that minorities have to work harder to get into college than your average white person is to deny reality. It's straight from the "all lives matter" playbook

Saying you had to work harder than a white person is no different than a white person saying they had to work harder than a black person who receives AA.

Ones a fact, the other is ignorance based on nothing but a false sense of jealousy

So lowering the standards and requirements entirly based on skin color is what then?

Don't you see the disconnect here

How can they claim to know how much harder they worked than white people when their entire point is that people are unfairly judging them how hard they worked because of their race?

Either you can judge someone based on their race or you can't. These people want to have it both ways.

An acknowledgment that we all didn't start on an equal footing and as such, evaluating every college student using the same base template only results in disadvantaged minorities being systematically shut out from higher education

Unfortunately, AA doesn't help minorities in this respect because it turns out that a kid who can only get into Harvard thanks to their bump from AA don't suddenly meet the adademic standards required to succeed at Harvard.

It certainly favors whites over asians

But supporters of AA don't like to think about that.

The amusing thing about this topic is that almost everyone in here trying to pick a fight has also questioned the qualifications of minorities at an elite college whenever there's a topic made involving minorities being accepted into elite colleges.

The only time I can think of anything related to this is when this story came out:

http://college.usatoday.com/2017/04/04/this-teen-wrote-blacklivesmatter-over-and-over-on-his-stanford-application-and-got-in/

yes, I'm aware of his resume, just pointing out the only story I can remember

Definitely hurts us lol. Not sure about white I know Asians need like 4.0 to get into good schools. I looked at med school acceptance and basically for me, 4.0s and high SAT score, Mexican people 3.2 black 2.8 gpas.

Umm. Just make it 4.0 or 3.8 flat. If you get in just becaus color, you'll flunk out snyway, instead get two doctors of any race than waste it
I-I really needed this~~
