Kendall Jenner accused of cultural appropriation over improper emoji use

  3. Kendall Jenner accused of cultural appropriation over improper emoji use.
Kendall Jenner sparked some controversy on Twitter for her use of an emoji.

The 21-year-old supermodel took to Twitter to celebrate the cover of The Hollywood Reporter, which features her, her sister Kylie Jenner, her mother Kris Jenner and her half-sisters Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian, the Daily Mail reported. The cover celebrated 10 years of the hit reality television show "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" on E!

"Sister power...girl power," Kendall tweeted, adding a tanned fist bump emoji. The choice of emoji had some Twitter users accusing the model of once again attempting to appropriate black culture.

Many fans defended Kendall and the Kardashians. "Her sisters are Armenian... she has a right to use that emoji just as we all do," wrote one Twitter user. "The tone she used it literally called medium... not black!"

"Can everyone like calm down with the hand thing it is an emoji so what if it is a different colour like who cares," wrote another. "Legit cannot believe the comments on this people are so stupid and ridiculous legit shut up what has she ever done to you," added another user.

Kendall did not respond to the accusations. In the magazine interview, Kim revealed that it isn't unlike Kendall to keep her emotions private. She spoke about how the widespread criticism over her controversial Pepsi commercial affected her half-sister behind the scenes.

"We're not perfect, but you see these things in the media, like Kendall and her Pepsi ad, where I see her at home crying," Kim told the magazine. "But in the media she looks another way because she's not addressing it."

"I'm the most private one. If there's a moment I don't want anyone to hear, I talk to myself or talk to someone in another room," Kendall added.

Kim revealed that she tried encouraging Kendall to speak out after the backlash, or to at least allow E! to use emotional scenes on the show.

"I'm just like, 'This is wrong. You need to speak up.' She [Kendall] was like, 'I don't ever want to show that footage of me crying,'" Kim explained. "She was trying to not make excuses or be dramatic, but that was what she was going through at the time."

"There are moments when it's hard to leave something in because it's vulnerable and it exposes us to a deeper level of emotion, and sometimes that's hard to share," Kris added.

The Pepsi ad was pulled within 24 hours of its premiere in April after facing severe scrutiny for trivializing Black Lives Matter demonstrations.

..i don't. sure i hear about the Kardashians here and there but you act like they control the world and you can't go outside without hearing about them...Probably because you have an irrational hatred for them and let any mention of them upset you way more than it should...I'll see mentions on Facebook or whatever, overhear coworkers or friends talk about something they did here and there...its not a big deal lol...

This brand of stupidity is no different from Flat Earthers or Scientologists, it just shows up in a different context that is a bigger hot button than most (I.E. Yeah, if you don't watch trashy TV news and stay away from trashy websites and people, it is extremely easy to not hear about the Kardashians.

The Kardashians like them or not are a big deal and popular. People talk about them all the time.

Pretending no one cares about them either makes you a liar or a social outcast.

Getting really angry on the internet makes the latter the most likely.

I have theee girly girl female cousins. Keeping up with the Kardashians is their favourite show. I lived with them for six months. Still didn't hear s*** about them unless I happened to come home while they were watching.

Like has been stated unless you religiously read People magazine and watch TMZ daily, it's very easy to not hear about these women.

Outrage culture has always existed. Its just easier to put out there now with social media...Then clickbait websites pick it up, it gets posted all over FB again and the links spread more...Like this topic. "Outrage Culture" won't go away..its not even a culture its a vocal (small) minority....What we need to do is stop giving things like this attention...but even then, the websites that get clicks from s*** like this won't stop.

It's not just that the issue itself is overblown; it's the reaction that gets overblown.

How to pen an article on someone saying something "controversial"

1. Find a statement by a celebrity or person of note that ostensibly and theoretically could offend a person somewhere in the world
2. Scroll through twitter/youtube/various social media to find the 3 or 4 idiots who were just bored enough to be offended by it and make a comment they don't even really care about themselves
3. Screenshot those comments. Title article something like "Celebrity in hot water as twitter users flock to social media in outrage"
4. Create a dramatic narrative suggesting the celebrity is no stranger to controversy and suggest some context to the remark that is probably totally irrelevant, e.g. "Celebrity has had a string of drug offenses the past 5 years"
5. Assign those twitter users a particular identity, e.g. "animal rights activists", "feminists", etc. Implicitly suggest this is the shared opinion of everyone

Ta da, instant social media outrage editorial.

For once I agree with the typically republican stereotype that people like this either work as baristas or are otherwise unemployed, because literally everyone I know who was ever like this had never so much as risen beyond a supervisory role at a small cafe.

The commercial had that. People in 7 figures each thought it was hilarious, offensive, bad, good,

That's what controversy is.

I try not to associate with people who are more radical but they do exist and they educate young minds, own businesses, corporations, make hiring decisions and so on. There are plenty of non-fluff stories that have happened even very recently about people criticizing progressive agendas being pushed at work.
