  3. Austria: Muslim migrants want ban on jokes about Islam - survey
-Gavirulax- 3 days ago#1
THE majority of Muslim migrants in Austria want jokes about Islam to be banned, according to a new university survey.

The study, conducted by the Danube University of Krems, revealed a major contrast between typical Austrian values and those of migrants from countries like Somalia and Chechnya, who have fare more religious views.

The researchers found that 60 per cent of those interviewed believed jokes about Islam should be banned, while a quarter said Islam should influence the country’s laws.

Those who take offence to Islamic jokes also varies wildly country by country - as many as 70 per cent of Somalians wanted to ban jokes about Islam, while only 14 per cent of Iranians agreed a ban on jokes was necessary.

Chechens and Somalians also overwhelmingly agreed Islam should play more of a role in Austrian society, with as many as 72 per cent of Somalians wanting more Islam in Austria’s culture.

This year, Austria approved a series of measures aimed at integrating migrants, including a burka ban and the introduction of mandatory language lessons.

The controversial ban to block residents from wearing full-face coverings in public was met with fury from some human rights group and condemnation from many Muslim organisations.

But the country’s foreign minister Sebastian Kurz, who was behind the legislation, shrugged off criticism and vowed to get the proposals passed into law.

The new study also disturbingly found that of the interviewees 62 per cent of Syrians, 55 per cent of Afghans and 47 per cent of Somalians agreed that “Jews have too much power in the world”.

Nothing says progressive like protecting the ability of a group to engage in oppressive actions without criticism or mockery.

Then they are truly lost....

I remember when I went to school in SW Sydney (predominately Muslim area) following 9/11, we weren't allowed to mention the causes or reasoning behind 9/11, had a whole letter sent home and everything (which eventually made it to the Current Affairs program here).

Sigh....loathe being brought up under that pugnacious fairy tale.

I imagine most refugees or migrants leave Iran due to conflict with the theocratic regime, whereas most people leave Somalia due to conflict with the person who has the biggest gun.

Indeed, and Islam via Sharia is basically already the law of the land in Iran anyway.

how does a poll asking migrant Muslims what they think reflect poorly on "progressive"s? are you actually asserting that migrant Muslims accurately represent the "progressive" movement? or did you not actually read the article at all and simply displayed your gut reaction to liberals?

I'm not entirely sure what he meant but I would assume he means how criticism of Islam is often a very quick way to be labeled right wing by those who know nothing about the religion (or those following Taqiya or spreading a misguided Dawah).

Ask Americans whether jokes about Christianity or the constitution be banned and you would find similar results.

I don't really get the point of this article tbqh
They basically asked people who are accustomed to stuff like that being banned whether they think it should be banned. Of couse some of them are going to say yes.

Equally as stupid (although I'd have a tiny bit more tolerance to something like the Constitution, still wouldn't agree with it though).

In fact I'm sure there was a recent poll about it, f***ed if I can find it though.

The problem with Islam (as always wherever it spreads) is it refuses to assimilate (or does so extremely slowly via the use of garbage words like Islamophobia, which means nothing).

Anti-Islam crowd is generally people whose lives Islam f***ed over during childhood - I don't much care for the far-right take on it since that is clearly for their own ends.

Pretty much, it's hard to find an example where Islam has spread and something positive has been the outcome (of course this can be said of all religion) but those who think Islam doesn't control more of life than Christianity, especially in this day and age don't know much about Islam).

That or we have the usual apologists hiding behind "Abrahamic Faith is all like it" - yeah they're all bad, Islam just happens to be the worst at the moment.

This is true, I've never been more certain that I don't identity as either left or right on most issues.

For example I cannot just bash or defend Trump on everything he does...context is great (though he does f*** up most things).

Regardless of what culture you come from, it's unreasonable to migrate to another country and demand their culture to adapt to yours. This especially applies to Americans going to the Middle East, but it also applies vice versa.

Exactly, with the exception of certain wars....if a Christian (or Atheist) went to Iran and decided that...well...certain things should change, the outcome would be most obvious.

Well to be fair, Americans don't want the Middle East to westernise, they want it to modernise

As in equal rights for women and gays. That's not a tall order

Why?

The "west" still has large parts that think Women and LBGT are worth less than men. In a lot of wester countries it's only relatively recently been delgalised being gay.

Women? that's nonsense. Where in the west are women thought of as less than men?

Lumping women in with minorities is such a farce.
