Authorities had to scramble to accomodate the thousands of migrants, most of t hem haitians crossing over the border as Jean-Pierre Fortin said that Canada's Customs and Immigration President said it has been a crisis and they're not designed to handle huge immigration demands 500 asylum seekers crossed the border as increasing numbers of migrants seeking asylum have been arriving in Canada in recent months as authorities have been housing them in university dorms and hotels but those are no longer adequate 2500 migrants, 90% of them Haitian crossed the border to Canada as now they have to use an Olympic Stadium to house them which was used for the 1976 Games Several children were included in this group as they are temporarily being stayed there and being fed, housed and given clean clothes as authorities will help them integrate, including school-aged children in a few weeks time when classes resume Nontheless, the mayor and premiere said that the city welcomes refugees and said that they will do everything they can to help them. The response was in no doubt because of Trump's anti-immigration and now it appears, anti-non english speakers being welcomed to the states and refugees in America fear of what will become of them and have been crossing over to Canada for asylum. Not really. I would say its very relevant but whatever. Think what you want. I understand why you as a Canadian want to downplay it I'm not downplaying it. It's horrible and the need to deal with the horrible treatment of Indigenous people is absolutely critical it is. It is incredibly shameful that there has been so little progress and that movements like the Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women and Idle No More have not gotten more traction with he general public. Don't f***ing assume that I don't care or put words in my mouth. That being said, it's off topic. It is completely different than foreign and immigration policy. It strikes me as a desperate attempt to distract from the s***ty ass treatment of refugees and immigrants in the US. It is pure ad hominem. But whatever, think what you want. I understand why as an American you'd be desperate to discredit your critics. |

Don't Haitians generally speak french anyway? That's, honestly, a really weird stereotype. Unless you are in Quebec, the majority of the country doesn't speak French. I didn't start learning French until I was 25, and that was just for fun. Where I grew up, there was no French programs or even French classes. |

2500 migrants, 90% of them Haitian that doesn't sound like "american refugees" at all that's Haitian refugees/migrants crossing in through the US border. this topic title is like if a Syrian walked/drove through europe to get to Scandinavia, and you called him a Greek refugee as he crosses into Albania, and then he's called an Albanina refugee as he crosses into Bosnia, and so on, untikl he's called a Danish refugee crossing into Sweden |

I didn't start learning French until I was 25, and that was just for fun. Where I grew up, there was no French programs or even French classes. What province are you in? When I was in school in Ontario, French classes were mandatory until grade 9.
