Why did the election of a conservative shell shock so many people?

  3. Why did the election of a conservative shell shock so many people?
--kresnik-- 1 day ago#1
I know the liberal media projected a 97% chance of Hillary winning, but still. People are acting like this is the first conservative president we have ever elected.

It's just like the Szechuan sauce thing (that helped me realize this): it's the unfounded sense of entitlement to have something that you want.

Typically, we don't have more than two or three consecutive terms of the same party. Why did people seem to think that we would be guaranteed to have a democratic president indefinitely?
And that's the bottom line, cuz southcoast said so.

I don't think a Mitt Romney or Jeb Bush election would have had the same response; Trump is seen as uniquely wrong and aberrant.

liberals are like that. if they had their way, the country would be a one party state with democrats ruling forever. And I think most of the ones whining are ones so young this is their first election they paid attention to. they probably don't even remember Bush.

as for me, I predicted that whoever got the republican nomination would be the next president. usually we go back and forth. after Trump it will probably be a democrat president

This is true. It's more the man than what side he ran on.
Because he's not a conservative and he's not a politician. You wouldn't have seen nearly this level of vitriol if Kasich, Rubio, Bush, or the others were elected.
People weren't shocked by a conservative winning. People were shocked that he personally won.

Largely because Trump is a gigantic joke.

Wasn't "Shock at a conservative" it was "shock at Donald Trump."

People would also be shocked if Whoopi Goldberg became president and it wouldn't be "Because she's liberal." it'd be because she's hilariously unsuitable for that position and it just means bad things and immense suffering for the nation and large parts of the population.

And Trump's administration thus far has lived up to the hype of being a complete trainwreck that would be hilarious to watch as a fictional TV Show but as reality is deeply disturbing for the entire planet.
^ Hey now that's completely unfair.

Also, I would note that Obama's personal charisma resulted in Democrats fooling themselves with myths about how the electoral map and demographics ensured their grip on the White House, even if they lost power at every other level. They took Obama's success as something that just any Democratic candidate could replicate.

Bernie Sanders had experience picking up trash and protesting. He had no concept of how things work or why things couldn't be done. Crazy as she was, at least Hillary knew he was making promises that nobody could keep (she was right about him repeating her ideas on a grander scale).

Donald Trump knows something that none of these people know: how to get shit done. He has successfully created jobs and eliminated unnecessary expenses throughout his years. He knows how to generate money and he dislikes stagnant systems that don't work, save for the few who immorally profit.

We are recovering from eight years of intentional sabotage and what may be irreparable racial tension which was fueled and fanned by Obama. We have one side hell bent on taking rights and people are surprised when the opposing side won!

funny-ish story, I interned in DC with someone who was a research assistant for one of the professors that runs huffpost's pollster thing that actually predicted a 97% chance for Hildawg to win. Anyway, this was summer 2016 and he was super smug about it, used to talk lots of shit about Nate Silver and 538 for misrepresenting the chances of Trump winning to 'seem reasonable' but how it was an abuse of statistics etc

I havent talked to him since then but I kinda wanna see what he'd say now

Trump no consecutive. The thing is Trump was a win for the super far right. Conservatives are now centrists by comparison. The center is now the left and the left is now the far left. Reagan would be seen as a Liberal SJW by current Republican standards.

Were you up during election night? The vast majority of polls were predicting a clear Hillary win all through the afternoon and into the evening. There's whole post-mortems analyzing how so many were wrong, with the most common theory being that Trump voters, when polled, lied because there was such a negative stigma associated with voting for him.

Because we're in the safe space social media era. People think because Reddit says Trump is about to be impeached and upvote everything negative about him, that's how the country feels. They constantly post surveys that say 99 percent of Americans hate Trump but its like a survey of 5 people in liberal California lol

How vocal Trump is what makes people want to cry. Normally conservatives do what they normally do lowkey and these people that pretend they are outraged so much see Trump boasting about it and lose their mind

When it comes down to it. It's really not that bad and he will most likely get re elected because the people that hate him don't vote. they just prefer to retweet Trump will be impeached!

First of all, what "actions" I'm not taking responsibility for? Second, if you think that he's not American (even when showed his birth certificate) and he's Muslim (even when he he said she was Christian) then it shows "thinking" isn't one of your strong points. (If you want to call it that )

Assuming trump lasts, (he probably will) you can bet 2020 won't repeat the same mistake.

What everyone said is right though, it's not that a "conservative" (i use that term lightly) won, it's that TRUMP won.

It also had to do with the polls as you mentioned for the exact reasons you mentioned.

Trump winning as a Democrat would have been shocking too. People weren't shocked 1 of 2 parties won. They were shocked a fucking idiot won a party nomination and then the entire election. They were shocked the country could be enough a joke for that scenario to occur.

It's probably been said, but they thought the core values of the whole country had changed because they stayed in their tiny corner of it. "everyone" believed in gay marriage, trans rights, and picking your own gender. "everyone" loved Obamacare and there were no unintended side effects like rising premiums. And even when they didn't have everyone, most big names were supporting fighting climate change and supported suppressing vile hate speech like "I didn't like Ghostbusters 2016". Then like the coyote in the cartoon, found their endless road was painted on the wall.

Trump may be an agrivant, but like Obama's race to the other guys I doubt they'd be much better with anyone else.

    the what?

McDonald's dipping sauce. They were having a special limited release of it in response to a joke in a Rick and Morty episode. People went insane when McDonald's ran out.

To be fair, McDonald's didn't specify that by "limited release" they meant "a small number of our locations will get maybe 20 packets of sauce".

So, you get these fans who wanted to try the sauce traveling to the nearest location that will have the sauce, which could be well out of their way, and they get there to find that the sauce ran out pretty much immediately because that particular McDonald's only got a shipment of two dozen packets or less.

Yeah, the reaction was ridiculously bad, but I can understand why they'd be frustrated.
    --kresnik-- 1 day ago#98
Yeah, but it wasn't special Szechuan sauce. They could have bought it anywhere.

I guess they felt that they were tricked into buying nuggets/strips and then told there was no sauce. Bait and switch.

Also, I would note that Obama's personal charisma resulted in Democrats fooling themselves with myths about how the electoral map and demographics ensured their grip on the White House, even if they lost power at every other level. They took Obama's success as something that just any Democratic candidate could replicate.
