Hell I was thought of as either a outlaw, drunkard or drug addict because I listened to Rock music.

Country music fans are viewed as being only white, racists, supremacists or ignorant.

What makes Rap fans exclusive ?

I remember hearing this in the radio about a week ago.

I don't believe that one causes the other, just that both are part of an overarching culture in some communities.

I wouldn't say it glorifies it. Its like the news, it is what it is, and musical expression makes it easier to deal with things like that. Like if you're angry is it better to just go around punching people or would it be better to express it in a song? I think we know which one is more productive.

I disagree. Rap absolutely glorifies a violent lifestyle. If it didn't, half the rappers that aren't real bangers wouldn't portray that they are--assuming your point is rappers are typically angry people expressing their violent tendencies versus acting on them.

well yeah there ARE idiots for sure that just want to bang, but there is a faction of rappers that use it as an artistic outlet and that's what I identify with. Kendrick Lamar is a good example. Like you have to tell your truth for artistic integrity which unfortunately is pretty negative and growing up in a violent world. That's not glorifying it. These folks didn't choose this life, but they have to deal with it the same, have a little compassion.

There's tons of rap songs that aren't about violence! Here are some of my favorite examples.

I feel like a lot of people automatically assume that talking about something is promoting it.

there are plenty who condemn gun violence, hard drugs, irresponsible sex, etc... talking about something doesn't make it a negative.

Saying that rap music is only about violence, drugs or sex is the same thing as saying country music is only about alcohol, trucks or the woman that did you wrong.

Both are oversimplifications and therefore, not true. There are easily many examples of rap music that are not like that, but the prejudiced mind won't search for them or be responsive to them.

Sure, but you're incorrect to say that rap isn't music, which is the basis for why you are receiving criticism.

That's not how burden of proof works. Reality doesn't care what people in some topic assume.

I don't know why you think the order of events works out in the way you're thinking, but you're the one that made the claim that rap isn't music. Back up your claim.

Start of discussion: "Researchers claim rap music is..."
    You: "Rap isn't music."
    Others: "Explain yourself."
You Now: "You first have to explain why rap is music."

    Son, you ain't right.

I rejected the claim that rap is music. My rejection is based on a lack of evidence. Until I see evidence that rap is music, I have no obligation to "back up" anything.

    Define music.

We can take some definitions to be:
vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.

    Another definition:
the art of combining vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion

Rap neatly fits into both categories. It's music by these commonly accepted (but incomplete) definition.

@TrevorBlack79 Explain what the definition of music is, and then argue why rap doesn't fit the criteria. If you can't then piss off.

Those are the same definition worded slightly differently. And they're both too vague to be useful.

the only way you can exclude some rap from the broader category music is if you require that Melody, Harmony, and Rhythm (the three main parts of music) are present at all times.

but if you make Melody, Harmony, or Rhythm necessary, then there's tons of other music that doesn't fit that definition

the definitions that Pinky gave are apt - to define it any further would be to exclude a lot of music from being called music - but the definition I prefer is "organized sound." the only way I'd be willing to get any more specific than that is to call it "sound organized such that it is pleasing to hear."

music is an extremely broad category, so it's necessary to give it an extremely broad definition. individual genres can have more specific rules for what defines them, but even then, no matter how they're defined, there are songs unquestionably inside those genres that don't meet that definition
