Peaceful religions Biproduct of destabilization. Muslim extremism is just a vehicle for regime change and anarchy.

they had an Islamic revolution that took over the country and changed the rules. the girls in that picture are still there, now wearing veils and they probably hate how history turned out. I doubt they survived it.

It's surprising how many people think that normal Muslims just decided to up and destroy their prosperous country one day without any outside interference. Pick up a history book.

islam took over ITP: Islam never existed in Afganistan in the past. |
The Soviets invaded, so the US funded and trained religious extremists (including Bin Laden himself) to fight a guerilla war against them. The Soviets got pushed out, but the crazies needed an enemy so they turned on us.
So essentially, the cold war happened.

Enlighten us
I think he's referring to the the people saying Islam as if it didn't already exist in the country.
nobody said islam didn't already existWhat happened was first world countries and imperialism, the root of all modern political problems.
The brits were paranoid that the russians would take over afghanistan and use it as a launch pad for their influence and attacks against their colonies in india, so they sent spies and troops to the area. The russians were, obviously, in the same boat and also sent spies to investigate. After a while the brits decided to invade and failed miserably. This went on for a while and came to be known as, "the great game".
Some time later king amanullah had enough of this shit and declared independence and tried to reform the country. Got rid of the burqa, made education mandatory for both genders and abolished slavery. Apparently all the conservatives didn't like all these crazy new ideas and assassinated him. RIP real progress.
Fast forward to the cold war, USSR and USA try to play, "the great game" round 2 and the rest is pretty much history. I think you guys are more or less familiar with the rest of the political machinations by both parties.
Also for some reason a lot of you keep bringing up islam or radical islam, but like others have said that was there long before imperialism came to ruin the day. Religion was just another device they used to help them manipulate the geopolitical climate. Exact same thing would have happened if they were zoroastrian/tengri/etc.Pineapples are in my head.
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t92/muttley1211/bug.gifI don't get the people in here downplaying the fundamentalism aspect. Of course Islam was in the country before. The Taliban controlling the majority of the country after being empowered by the west was a new development. If people came into America and fucked it up and extreme Christianity took over in the power vacuum aftermath, would it be Christianity's fault or the people who destroyed our country?hockeybub89 posted...Pow Pow Punishment posted...

Both. Blame should go on the enablers and the actors. It'd be crazy to eschew responsibility for either one.
Edit: your analogy isn't actually applicable in its wording. I'm blaming 1. outside influencers and 2. fundamentalists, not "Islam" as a mere ideology. So you would have to change that to "Would you blame the fundamentalist Christians?", not "Would you blame Christianity?"
wasserpanzer posted...you said it yourself. if not for external influence, they would have never gained popular acceptance
It's disingenuous to say the Taliban regime enjoyed "popular acceptance" and that's why they ruled the country. We need to look at the history to find out why they were more powerful than Ahmad Shah Massoud's secular, moderate forces coming out of the Soviet war. Massoud's fundamentalist nemesis, Hekmatyar, received more CIA support even though Massoud was MUCH more effective at fighting the Soviets. Come the American invasion, a majority of polled Afghans supported overthrowing the Taliban oppressors with their foreign Arab bedfellows.
Anyway, like I said, one isn't mutually exclusive from the other. External influence and religious extremism are both to blame."I knew that I would get a chance to see the world and beat up its people." -Josh Barnett on martial arts
