In its latest momentous policy shift, the Boy Scouts of America will admit girls into the Cub Scouts starting next year and establish a new program for older girls based on the Boy Scout curriculum that enables them to aspire to the coveted Eagle Scout rank. Founded in 1910 and long considered a bastion of tradition, the Boy Scouts have undergone major changes in the past five years, agreeing to accept openly gay youth members and adult volunteers, as well as transgender boys.
The expansion of girls' participation, announced Wednesday after unanimous approval by the organization's board of directors, is arguably the biggest change yet, potentially opening the way for hundreds of thousands of girls to join.
The Girl Scouts of the USA, which had sought unsuccessfully to dissuade the Boys Scouts from making this move, said they remained committed to their single-gender mission. "Girl Scouts is, and will remain, the scouting program that truly benefits U.S. girls by providing a safe space for them to learn and lead," the Girl Scouts said in a statement.
Many scouting organizations in other countries already allow both genders and use gender-free names such as Scouts Canada. But for now, the Boy Scout label will remain. "There are no plans to change our name at this time," spokeswoman Effie Delimarkos said in an email.
Under the new plan, Cub Scout dens — the smallest unit — will be single-gender, either all-boys or all-girls. The larger Cub Scout packs will have the option to remain single gender or welcome both genders. The program for older girls is expected to start in 2019 and will enable girls to earn the same Eagle Scout rank that has been attained by astronauts, admirals, senators and other luminaries.
Boy Scout leaders said the change was needed to provide more options for parents. "The values of scouting — trustworthy, loyal, helpful, kind, brave and reverent, for example — are important for both young men and women," said Michael Surbaugh, chief scout executive.
The announcement follows many months of outreach by the BSA, which distributed videos and held meetings to discuss possibility expanding girls' participation beyond existing programs, such as Venturing, Exploring and Sea Scouts.
Surveys conducted by the Boy Scouts showed strong support for the change among parents not currently connected to the scouts, including Hispanic and Asian families that the BSA has been trying to attract. Among families already in the scouting community, the biggest worry, according to Surbaugh, was that the positive aspects of single-sex comradeship might be jeopardized. "We'll make sure those environments are protected," he said. "What we're presenting is a fairly unique hybrid model."
During the outreach, some parents expressed concern about possible problems related to overnight camping trips. Surbaugh said there would continue to be a ban on mixed-gender overnight outings for scouts ages 11 to 14. Cub Scout camping trips, he noted, were usually family affairs with less need for rigid polices.

When will fraternities start accepting women? Will girl scouts accept boys? Will sororities start accepting men? Are exclusive clubs a thing of the past? Are they offensive now?

Will there still be scouts just for boys? It seems that amount of activities where boys can be boys are diminishing.

Interesting. The Girl Scouts did not want the Boy Scouts to do this. I would have been very happy to have had girls in the Boy Scouts when I was a member for a short while. It would have given me more of a reason to stay in longer, at least. I'm sure a lot of the male scouts today are looking forward to the new change.

I'm a woman who was a member of a fraternity, lol. There's many co-ed ones. Anyway, it's a great move and I wish I could have been in the boy scouts instead of girl scouts.

When the frats, girl scouts, a sororities themselves decide upon it. The BSA has chosen that the Cub Scout program is now co-ed, and females capable of getting the prestigious eagle scout rank while in a Girl or Venture/Explorer scout. Both are great things, imo, and I say this as a eagle who spent 5 years as a boy scout camp counselor.

Ehh, I'm against this. I heard about it on NPR the other day. I think boys, males, men, need their own space. I think boys need a "right of passage". It's something missing in our culture that we once had and most cultures still do. The Scouts are just about all that's left of the old world.

Tbh it's probably because of TC. Just how people start shit posting without, say reading, Admiral or Mal Fet's articles. When certain posters tend to make shit posts and race bait and post agenda driven topics, people tend to be less objective. But reading the article, though I know nothing about the Scouts other than cookies :-) it seems this is just a chance to extend ranks and accomplishments to girls through the Boy Scouts that the Girl Scouts don't have. While still leaving the option for groups of Boy Scouts to remain single gender or multi-gender. Doesn't really sound like a bad thing to me, I guess.

The actual Boy Scout program (going from about 4th grade to senior year in high school) remains male only. Cub scouts is for K-4 age ranges. You can start your own Boys Club, you know.

Apparently scouts canada has been fully integrated since 1998. Hasn't seemed to cause a problem. Girl scouts still exists and sells delicious cookies twice a year.
