Why are they given human names? It was funny the first time maybe but now it just seems mean to name that after actual people's names whose feelings might be hurt.

It's utterly bizarre.

Name them after diseases. Hurricane Ebola

Name them after famous terrorists and people will definitely evacuate. Or better yet, just name them all "Hurricane Terrorism".

Because they have to come up with different names every year, so giving them human names is easier and more memorable. What would be a better alternative?

Its stupid giving them human names like they are some kind of friend.

They should just be alphabets and numbers. Or make up new names.

Hurricane George, typhoon suzy, tornado amanda. They just sound stupid.

Yeah it's like we all laughed at hurricane katrina, but now we've got hurricane maria and irma... these are real names that people have, what are they just going to have to live down sharing a name with a disaster the rest of their lives?

^ ^ Yes there's a rotation, but it still doesn't explain why they use human names that could cause people to be teased mercilessly. As you know kids can be so cruel...

Talk to your local senator, and lobby at Washington. Together, we can make a difference.

If popular voting was a thing, then every single hurricane would be named Windy McWindyface because there's not an ounce of creativity on the entire internet

but they'd have to do one for every letter!
the weather channel could hold the polls and 4chan could rig them, it would be great

The original meteorologist to give them names was a man named Clement Wragge. He named them after politicians he didn't like.

True story.

They actually recycle the lists every 6 years, retiring particularly deadly storm names.

For the Hurricanes with Spanish names it doesn't make sense for them to have female names since the word "huracan" is considered male. Which is why you say "el/un huracan" not "la/una huracan" it would also have to be called "huracana" lol

That's like saying it doesn't make sense for people to have male names because it's "la/una persona" and not "el/un persón".

Yes but why

Because it is easier than making up names, or coming up with what will sound like gobbledygook to most people.
Easy way to identify which storm hit land on what date time, how much monetary damage it caused, how many people it killed among other statistics.

If you really want to know how people deal with sharing a name with a disaster, you could just ask people who have the same name as you
Maybe they should be named after the 4 Horsemen. Hurricane War, Hurricane Death, Hurricane Pestilence, Hurricane Famine...
