- Just kicked out my roommate (story) (pics)
As a handful of you might know, I am very passionate about collecting antique furniture and artwork. I have a large collection of things, many of which are tables that have a specific type of marble that is quarried primarily in italy. I collect tables like this is all sorts of conditions and restore them if needed. my most recent purchase was an 8' long table that looks like it was probably from a great hall or a church at some point. the marble was broken into 3 pieces and the wood finish had a strong patina that needed some refinishing. this was my most ambitious project yet as i had to rebond the marble slab that was too heavy to move with one person and i needed a bonding agent that would match the marble and polish the same way as marble. the whole thing needed to have scratches polished and and i wet sanded it down starting at 300grit going up to 7000grit for a shiny finish. i was really happy with the fixed result and it made a really nice coffee table with plenty of room for your feet underneath.
now for some backstory. about a year ago i invited my friend i met through work to live with me for a while for free so that he could save up money. i had been working with him for a year at that point and we had become good friends. he accepted my offer and was very grateful. but he has since given me trouble as he is an alcoholic. he gets drunk 4-5 times a week, but the degree varies. maybe once a month he will get so drunk that he becomes incoherent and will barely be able to stand. obviously this does not go well with a collection of antique furniture. up until now, he hadnt broken anything serious. some cups and plates, a burnhole in a couch once, and he's pissed in the closet. but last night he came home after his new year celebrations and got so drunk that he fell on this newly fixed table and crushed it beyond repair. he also broke a wine glass and plate that my grandma gave me. he was passed out with his ass out on the couch when i got home and saw this mess. there was also a large pool of hardened candle wax next to a fallen candle which meant there was a lit candle on the table when he crushed it. i hadnt replaced my carpet with wood flooring a few months ago he probably would have burned my place down. i told him on the couch that he had 3 days to get all his shit out of my apartment and be gone, but he was too drunk to comprehend what was happening so i sent him a text explaining this to his phone for him to see when he woke up. when he moved in i specifically explained that if he ever broke a table, he was out. i reminded him of this in that text. he slept in very late this morning as he was hungover. i was waiting to speak to him but i went out to check a while ago and he was gone. he didnt take anything important with him but he left and didnt say anything to me or respond to my text. he doesnt have a key and i locked the door and instructed my doorman to not let him in and to tell him to call me when he wants to get his stuff. i have no idea how he's taking all this. him not saying anything to me and leaving is very strange. now i have to mourn the remains of my table and see if it might be possible to fix it or at least salvage the pieces. it makes me feel terrible to have breathed life back into this table after rescuing it from a filthy garage and giving it a new home where it would be appreciated only to take it all away a moment later. Here is a picture of what the table looked like when i was almost finished repairing it https://imgur.com/a/k13lY And after: https://imgur.com/a/obIzx |
I was gonna make a joke but that actually was a pretty badass table.

The scenario of you finding him like this reminds me of a story from the early 1800s.
"As drunk as David’s sow ; a common saying, which took its rise from the following circumstance: One David Lloyd, a Welchman, who kept an alehouse at Hereford, had a living sow with six legs, which was greatly resorted to by the curious; he had also a wife much addicted to drunkenness, for which he used sometimes to give her due correction. One day David’s wife having taken a cup too much, and being fearful of the consequences, turned out the sow, and lay down to sleep herself sober in the stye. A company coming in to see the sow, David ushered them into the stye, exclaiming, there is a sow for you! did any of you ever see such another? all the while supposing the sow had really been there; to which some of the company, seeing the state the woman was in, replied, it was the drunkenest sow they had ever beheld; whence the woman was ever after called David’s sow."

I'm more surprised that you tolerated this **** for so long. Peeing in the closet, what the ****? When you live with an alcoholic it's kind of like that situation where a frog gets dropped in cold water and the temperature raises so gradually that it doesn't know it's melting. Probably just started with sleeping on the couch occasionally, or leaving a mess of beer bottles and pizza boxes. Then one day you come home and man ass is hanging off the couch and your antique marble table looks like it exploded.

Fuck, came into this topic thinking "Probably some piece of shit addict". And of course, piece of shit addict.
You were FAR more generous than he deserved, from the beginning. I hope this is a good lesson on never to give addicts a chance. If he did that to my shit, I would have thrown him out of the apartment along with his shit and changed the locks. He could figure his shit out from there when he woke up. Fucking worthless shit addicts. That was a nice table.
I have a signature. Apparently this is important, but I still don't have my secret cool kid decoder ring yet.

Makes you wonder if he pee'd in a random corner of the house somewhere. He pissed the table, then fell in it then crawled onto the couch. Which is why his pants are down |

I mean, drunk is drunk, but imagine getting drunk off of Miller Lite. What a terrible drunk. This too, lol. My wife's brother came over for New Years and was like near stumbling off of a 6 pack. I was halfway through a 5th of tequila by then and slightly better off than he was at that point.

And the thing about adicts is that they can go through cycles of good and worse. So it’s not always constantly bad. It’s also compounded when you already have a relationship with the person and care about them. And/or if you’re financially dependent on their contribution to rent. Or worried about living alone.

What an ass (I mean that not as a compliment to his ass) he's actually a good guy at heart. i mean we were good enough friends for me to invite him to live with me. he never has any ill intent, he's just so much of a drunk and a screwup that he ruined everything by accident |

yeah I've lived with someone like that. gotta get rid of them This along with what Pinky has said. The one I was with I had known since birth (pretty much at least, 2 years younger and lived across the street until he was like 10). One of the hardest things I've done but it hit that point where he had to want to change himself and everything I was doing to mitigate his damage was just enabling him further. He's doing better. Hope your buddy does too. Sorry about everything in general, no one deserves this.

a burnhole in a couch once, and he's pissed in the closet, i hadn't replaced my carpet with wood flooring a few months ago he probably would have burned my place down.
What an ungrateful fuck. Being that disrespectful towards someone giving him place to live for free, and this is how he repays that? Gets drunk, breaks shit, pisses in closet/s, sleeps bare ass on couch, and almost got you/him/both killed or burnt you home.

yeah, i got that you are/were good friends, but tbh that might had been one sided friendship. Does he have no honor? Like even little bit? If i had friend that was willing to let me live for free in their place i would be very humble, and would make my best not to fuck absolutely anything up in their home. that's huge gesture of kindess and show of trust towards a person, and guy just drinks and pisses everywhere...Can't think any good sigThat was a nice table. Yeah, you have to give 30 days even if they don't pay rent. His friend is probably too dumb to realize that though.Voted best user on CE 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017

No it doesn't. No lease, no rent paid, and he destroyed the homeowner's property."a minority is someone who you can tell off the bat they are black/hispanic/colored. LGBT isn't a minority" - Blakkheim1TrevorBlack79 posted...No it doesn't.
It will depends on where TC lives but theirs a good chance they have a good case.No lease, no rent paid,
Neither of these matter in most locations.he destroyed the homeowner's property.
This usually just changes the timeline needed. In most places with half decent landlord tenant laws, you'd still ned to go to court to evict someone.Dude, that table was beautiful.

TC's texts combined with the dude's stuff being there, are good evidence the room mate lived there. Any letters the room mate has received, while living there would be pretty good as well. TC's doorman could also testify.Flintlock_Staff posted...Tc pics of other stuff you restored?
@Kamala_HarrisCurrently Playing: Breath of the WildDragonGirlYuki posted...No consideration means no contract. The guy is letting him stay for free. It isn't like the roommate is paying rent. If anything he is just a long term guest rather than a coleasee.
You don't get it. There doesn't need to be a contract depending on the state. A freeloader that doesn't do shit or even pay actually has rights in certain places and you can't just throw them out. The law can actually regard them as a tenant and you have to take legal measures. I have no idea if that's the case here but it's definitely a thingTC I didn't know Newport lived with youDragonGirlYuki posted...No consideration means no contract.
Correct. The guy is letting him stay for free. It isn't like the roommate is paying rent.
That's irrelevant in any place with half decent tenant laws.If anything he is just a long term guest rather than a coleasee.
